The Rockport one-mile walk test estimates cardiorespiratory fitness from a fast walk rather than a maximal laboratory test. It can be practical when the protocol is suitable, but it still requires exertion and careful measurement.

The original Kline et al. study developed the equation in 343 healthy adults aged 30–69. The equation uses body mass, age, the published sex coefficient, time to walk one mile, and heart rate at the finish.

Before you start

Do not test if you feel acutely unwell or have chest discomfort, faintness, unusual breathlessness, a new concerning heartbeat, an injury that changes your gait, or instructions to avoid exertion. A practice statement on exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness emphasizes adapting exercise intensity and the parts of an exercise session to the person (Franklin et al., 2022). A consumer field test cannot provide individual medical clearance.

Equipment and setup

You need a flat, accurately measured one-mile route, which is 1.609344 kilometres; a timer; a way to measure heart rate immediately at the finish; comfortable shoes; and conditions that make the route safe. A curved or inclined treadmill is not automatically equivalent to the original track protocol.

Warm up gently. When ready, walk the mile as quickly as you can safely sustain without running. Stop for chest pain, faintness, severe breathlessness, confusion, sudden weakness, loss of coordination, or another alarming symptom. Use local emergency services for severe or sudden symptoms.

Record the result correctly

Save total time to the second and capture finish heart rate immediately. Delaying the pulse measurement can lower the recorded value as recovery begins. Record the course, weather, device, date, and any deviation that could affect comparison.

The estimator converts kilograms to pounds internally and time to decimal minutes before applying the published equation. It does not silently calculate if the age, time, heart rate, body mass, safety acknowledgement, or walking protocol falls outside its supported guardrails.

Interpret the estimate

The output is an estimated VO₂ max, not a direct gas-analysis measurement. Its uncertainty reflects both equation error and your test conditions. Do not compare it as though it were identical to a watch estimate, cycle test, or treadmill laboratory result.
