Fitness age and biological age are not interchangeable. Both use age as a communication device, but they usually summarize different measurements, reference populations, and assumptions.
A fitness-age estimate asks how selected fitness signals compare with values observed at different chronological ages. “Biological age” is a broader and less consistent label. Depending on the product or study, it might refer to blood markers, DNA methylation, organ function, physical performance, or a proprietary combination. Two biological-age services can therefore give different answers even when both calculations work as designed.
What Fitness Age Calculator measures
The current model is anchored in cardiorespiratory fitness. The Quick mode estimates that signal from age, a published reference-sex term, body size, resting heart rate, and an activity category using the Jurca et al. non-exercise equation. Advanced modes can use a protocol-valid walk test or an eligible treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise test.
The cardiorespiratory value is compared with the 2022 FRIEND treadmill reference standards. An eligible standardized handgrip result can contribute a separate strength domain. The output describes only those included signals. It does not claim to measure cellular aging, every organ system, or total health.
Why the distinction matters
An age-like result feels personal and precise. That makes transparent boundaries essential. A fitness-age result can move because your measurement method changed, your resting heart rate was taken under different conditions, or your field-test pacing improved. Those are not necessarily whole-body changes.
Likewise, a younger-looking number is not permission to ignore symptoms or established medical care. An older-looking number is not a diagnosis and says nothing about personal worth. The plausible range and confidence label often carry more useful information than the headline alone.
How to compare results responsibly
Before comparing any two age-style scores, ask four questions:
- What measurements went into each result?
- What population and age range supplied the reference?
- Was the calculation externally evaluated in people like you?
- Does the product show uncertainty and retain the original method version?
If those answers are unavailable, the numbers may look comparable while meaning different things. For progress tracking, repeating the same fitness protocol under similar conditions is usually more interpretable than comparing unrelated age scores.
