Fitness age is a way to express selected fitness measurements on an age-referenced scale. Instead of showing only a number such as an estimated VO₂ max, it asks: at what age does the reference population have a similar typical value?

That translation can make an unfamiliar measurement easier to understand. It does not make the answer a literal age. Your heart, lungs, muscles, balance, sleep, medical history, and daily life cannot be compressed into one birthday-like number.

What the comparison uses

This calculator starts with cardiorespiratory fitness. A Quick Assessment estimates it from ordinary inputs using a published non-exercise equation; a higher-quality assessment can use a standardized one-mile walk or an eligible laboratory measurement. The Jurca and colleagues non-exercise study shows why a no-exercise estimate can be useful, while also reporting meaningful prediction error.

The estimate is then compared with age- and reference-sex-specific cardiorespiratory data. The current reference comes from the 2022 FRIEND study, which summarized directly measured treadmill test results from apparently healthy US adults aged 20–89. That population and protocol matter: a reference curve is not a universal law.

An eligible standardized grip-strength result may add a second fitness domain in the Advanced Assessment. Missing information is not filled with an assumed average. When a domain cannot be used, the result says so.

Why you see a range and confidence label

Every input carries uncertainty. Resting heart rate changes with measurement conditions. Activity categories depend on recall. A walk-test estimate depends on course length, pace, finish heart rate, and how well the original research sample represents you. Even laboratory tests vary by equipment and protocol.

For that reason, the result pairs a rounded headline with a plausible range. It also labels confidence based on input quality, completeness, freshness, and protocol. Confidence describes the measurement, not the person. A low-confidence result is not a low-fitness verdict.

A useful way to read your result

Start with the range, then read the explanation of which inputs drove the estimate. Look for one practical next step: perhaps measure resting heart rate under quieter conditions, complete an appropriate field test, or repeat the same protocol after enough time for a meaningful comparison.

Use the result as context for a conversation with yourself—not as a diagnosis, clearance to exercise, or prediction of lifespan. If a measurement or symptom concerns you, seek appropriate professional advice.
